WHY SHOULD YOU BELIEVE that the Bible is true?

First, because the Bible claims that it is. "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God."  (2 Timothy 3:16)  The Bible also says that God cannot lie.

Second, because the Jewish scribes who spent their adult years copying the books of the Bible were in that position to faithfully reproduce those books. They took pride in their accuracy.

Third, the thousands of copies or fragments of the books of Scripture which exist today all say the same thing as we read in our Bible. This means the Bible has been faithfully translated from Hebrew, Latin, Aramaic, and Greek from its very earliest writings. The many editions or versions we now have available have all come from the same sources, and there are more copies of ancient Bible manuscripts than there are for any other histori-cal writings. (The Dead Sea scrolls found in Israel's Qumran Caves in 1947 contained all or parts of every book in the Old Testament but one...and these scrolls have been carefully dated to approximately 200 BC to 100 AD.)

Fourth, over the centuries extensive archeology all over Israel and particularly in and around Jerusalem has proven by the many artifacts recovered that the Bible's references to people and places are accurate.

Fifth, many people from ancient times until today have claimed to know the God who is referred to and por-trayed in Scripture. Also, Jesus is a historical person, referred to in other writings and not only in the Bible. If you were very sure you had met the God of the Bible through some means beyond your normal daily existence, would you not want to tell someone?  (Get a copy of a recent and wonderful book by John Burke which is titled Imagine Heaven: Near-Death Experiences, God's Promises, and the Exhilarating Future That Awaits You.)

Sixth, many people from ancient times until today have tried to prove the Bible is NOT true and all of them have failed.

Lastly, the Bible is chock full of prophecy. Many of the books in the Bible were written by ancient prophets. If it helps, think of prophecy as history written in advance. (Often many centuries in advance.) The fact that so many prophecies have come true over the years is certain evidence of the truth of the Bible. Only God can know history hundreds or thousands of years in advance!  Israel became a sovereign nation again in the year 1948, just as the Bible predicted would happen!

"I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the
beginning and from ancient times things which have not been done. ...Truly I have spoken; truly I will
bring it to pass. I have planned it; surely I will do it."  (Isaiah 46:9-11)

BECAUSE THE BIBLE IS TRUE, this verse is also true:
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."  (John 3:16)

From the Bible this week:

"Behold, the days are coming," says the Lord God, "that I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.

They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord, but shall not find it."
